Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet service, has introduced a new $10 monthly "kit fee" for new customers, adding yet another cost on top of recent service price increases.
The move has drawn immediate comparisons to the cable industry's long-criticized equipment rental fees.
Current Starlink pricing breakdown:
- $55/month for 100Mbps tier
- $85/month for 200Mbps tier
- $130/month for "Max" tier (up to 400Mbps)
- $10/month new hardware kit fee (new customers only)
- $199–$599 one-time hardware purchase
This means a new customer on the base tier would pay $65/month plus the upfront hardware cost — a significant increase from Starlink's original pricing promise of simple, affordable satellite internet.
Context:
- Starlink recently raised service prices by $5–$10 per month across plans
- The kit fee applies only to new customers
- Existing customers are currently exempt from the additional charge
- Starlink provides coverage to approximately 150 countries and territories
The price hikes come as Starlink faces increasing competition from other satellite internet providers and terrestrial 5G fixed wireless services. Critics argue that the creeping costs undermine Starlink's original mission of providing affordable internet access to underserved areas worldwide.
SpaceX has not commented on whether the kit fee will eventually apply to existing customers.
